Mood disorders cause severe emotional changes. With a mood disorder, you can experience the lowest of lows, the highest of highs, or both.
Mood disorders can interfere in your daily life and may become unbearable if you don’t get psychiatric help.
What are the types of mood disorders?
These are many types of mood disorders, including:
Depression
Depression includes a group of mood disorders that cause a heavy feeling of sadness that lasts at least two weeks. Many people with depression feel hopeless, unmotivated, and uninterested in their life.
Bipolar disorder
Bipolar disorder causes depressive (low mood) and manic (high mood) episodes. People with bipolar I disorder have manias but often have depressions, too. People with bipolar II disorder have depressive episodes, and also have hypomanic (less severe mania) episodes.
Cyclothymia
Cyclothymia is a milder type of bipolar disorder. It causes an unstable mood, with depression and hypomania episodes that go on for two years or longer. Symptoms of cyclothymia are less severe than bipolar I and II.
Mood disorders often happen along with other psychiatric conditions. For example, nearly 40% of adults who have a mood disorder also have attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
When do I need mood disorder treatment?
If your mood changes are hard to control and cause problems in day-to-day life, treatment can help. Dr. Leivent provides personalized treatment of mood disorders. He works with you in creating a focused treatment plan with both targeted medications and psychotherapy.
Medications like antidepressants, mood stabilizers, or antipsychotic drugs work inside the brain. They help regulate your mood and set you free from unhealthy intense emotions.
With psychotherapy, Dr. Leivent helps you understand and change unhealthy thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.
All of your appointments, including medication management and psychotherapy, are online through telehealth. So, you can have appointments in the privacy of your home, your office, or another place where you have privacy.
Appointments are also available by phone for those times when a teleconference isn’t possible.
