What is medication management?

Medication management is medical care that helps you take prescription drugs safely. While it happens in all medical fields, medication management has extra importance in psychiatry because you’re depending on your medication to help you improve your mental health and quality of life.

As a board-certified psychiatrist who uses a unique whole-person (holistic) strategy, Dr. Leivent specializes in psychiatric medication management for adults.

Do I need medication management?

Psychiatric disorders are biologically based, so it makes sense that drugs to correct biological imbalances are the ideal treatment for many of those disorders. You may find medication management helpful if you have:

  • Anxiety disorders
  • Mood disorders like major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder
  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Eating disorders
  • Sleep disorders
  • Substance use disorders

Medication management helps correct the things that are beyond your control, such as chemical imbalances and brain structure changes. That lets you focus on healing.

What is the medication management process?

Your first visit is a free 15-minute phone consultation. It includes a brief psychiatric history and a talk about your treatment goals.

The next step is an evaluation. Your 45-60 minute telehealth evaluation covers a more in-depth psychiatric history. Also, it includes a talk about the best treatment plan for you.

Dr. Leivent explains your medication options and prescribes the medication that’s best for you. You then have regular telehealth appointments to talk about medication effects and get refills.

He monitors you for side effects and medication interactions at each visit. Dr. Leivent can also change your medication and dosage based on how it’s working for you. His goal is to find the medication that works the best with your body chemistry and metabolism.

Dr. Leivent often recommends psychotherapy (talk therapy), too. While medication management covers your medication needs, psychotherapy helps you manage your moods, cope with stress, and swap negative thinking for positive thinking.

All appointments are through telehealth. Phone calls are also available when you need them (for example, when you can talk hands-free in a car or you’re otherwise on the go). You have direct phone and email contact with Dr. Leivent, and he responds within 24 hours.
