As recently as 20 years ago, mental health experts believed attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) went away by adulthood, but now they understand how damaging the disorder can be for adults. At his telehealth private practice based in Brooklyn, New York, serving the Park Slope area there and the Westwood, Brentwood, and Beverly Hills areas in Los Angeles, California, esteemed psychiatrist Jacob Leivent, MD, provides targeted medication and personalized treatment plans for adults with ADHD. Telehealth makes it easy to get in touch with the practice when you need support. Book your appointment online or call the office today.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) causes problems with attention and behavior. Some of the symptoms you may experience depend on the type:
Inattentive type
Inattentive ADHD causes attention and focus problems, with common adult symptoms including:
- Poor organization
- Difficulty finishing projects
- Difficulty focusing on work
- Mind wandering during conversations
- Avoiding mentally “heavy” tasks
- Losing items like keys frequently
Inattentive ADHD often causes problems at work, home, and in social environments.
Hyperactive/impulsive type
Hyperactive/impulsive ADHD can cause adults to struggle with issues such as:
- Interrupting conversations
- Talking excessively
- Risky behaviors
- Poor impulse control
The disorder looks different in kids. They’re more prone to run, jump, and climb inappropriately. While subtler in adults, hyperactive/impulsive ADHD can still be quite disruptive.
Combined type
Combined type ADHD means you have symptoms from both of the other types of ADHD.
What is ADD versus ADHD?
Attention deficit disorder (ADD) is a previous name for ADHD. The American Psychiatric Association (APA) officially changed the name of the disorder from ADD to ADHD in 1987. But many people still say ADD when referring to ADHD.
The name change happened because research at that time showed the disorder went beyond attention issues. Many people had problems with hyperactivity and impulsivity, which the previous name didn’t reflect. The term ADHD includes the full array of attention and behavior problems.
